School children are being fed a side product labeled as meat that has been sprayed with ammonia to kill pathogens. This product consists of the waste scraps and byproducts previously used in petfoods.
Because these parts are more susceptible to contamination, they were sprayed or injected with ammonia to kill pathogens. Unfortunately, even this method is not 100% effective.
The ammonia scent had received complaints from some school officials.
US government officials had approved of this treatment for meat. Ammonia is also sprayed on chicken.
